INVITATION TO WRITERS
The Centerville Library and Historic Centerville are preparing a new history book for the 2014 Centerville
Bicentennial (200 year) Celebration. Writers and researchers are invited to help with this project. Centerville has a rich
history since the founding in 1814.
For nearly fifty-six years it was the county seat of Wayne County. Some of Wayne County and Indiana's most
colorful characters of the 1800s came from Centerville. Indiana's Civil War Governor, Oliver P. Morton was born in Salisbury,
the first county seat, but was raised and educated in Centerville. James Pritchett, a naval officer in the Civil War, was
so well regarded that a battle ship was named for him that served during WW II.
Centerville has long been known for its antique shops and interesting architecture. Since 1964, Historic Centerville
has encouraged the preservation of historic properties in the town. Centerville was named a Historic District by the National
Register of Historic Places. This was the first historic district in Wayne County and it includes much of the town.
For more information about helping with the book, contact Beth Treaster at the Centerville Library, 765-855-5223

New roof for Mansion House
A new roof was completed for the Mansion House, a Centerville historic house. The property is owned and maintained by
the local historic society, Historic Centerville, Inc.
Bowman & Sons was the contractor for the project. The last repair to the roof was about 1987 so the old roofing had
to be completely removed. There was one layer on the north side. On the south front side, there were five layers of roofing
including cedar shakes. Cedar shakes was the original roof cover when the building was completed in 1840. As the old cedar
shingles were being torn off, the black dust made clouds over the work site.
Historic Centerville maintains the Mansion House property, which includes a large barn and the Salisbury Log Courthouse,
Wayne County's first courthouse. Historic Centerville is a non-profit organization and is operated by volunteers. There is
no endowment fund to care for the property so it is due to donations and memberships that allows the organization to care
for the buildings.
Over the past year, several improvements have been made to the buildings and new exhibits added inside. More opportunities
are being planned for the community to visit the Mansion House and Log Courthouse.
Historic Centerville works with a small budget. Thanks to the generous help of the Wayne County Foundation, Whitewater
Valley REMC, US Bank, First Bank, Main Source Bank, Steve Slonaker, Dolores Elstro, membership donations and fundraisers,
there was enough money to repair the roof.
The Centerville Library and Historic Centerville are the two cultural sites in Centerville. They both benefit the community.
However Historic Centerville receives no money except through community good will and generosity. Thanks to all who have helped
in the past. We look forward to having more of the community help Historic Centerville grow as a community asset.

Easter Seals office has closed
The Easter Seals of Wayne & Union County (Society for Persons with Disabilities) began serving this area in 1948.
Clients were served out of the homes of the directors. The present office site on US 40 West was opened in 1993.
In recent years we have provided a variety of programs for our clients: Medical supplies and equipment loan program;
special camping programs in specific locations for youth and adults with disabilities; a Disability Awareness Education Program
taught to 1st and 4th graders in several elementary schools in both counties; social programs for youth & adults with
disabilities such as Activity Day with creative games, music, etc., and a specially arranged field trip to the Indiana State
Fair.
Late in 2009 our local Easter Seals began to see a large reduction in financial support. As United Way
changed its focus for local funding, other grants became more restricted or offered reduced amounts to our non-profit organization.
Although we continued our fundraising events such as Turkey Chase, Frost Bite, County Fair Pizza Booth, Clue Hunt, and Yard
Sale, we could not raise enough to cover our financial responsibilities.
We would like to graciously thank all the volunteers and local businesses who supported us through our varied events
and believed so deeply in our program.
It is with a saddened heart that your local Easter Seals Board of Directors announces the closing of the Easter
Seals Wayne & Union County office effective October 1, 2012.
Further information and questions can be addressed by calls to the office at 855-2482.

Quilt Show a huge success this year
Historic Centerville’s Quilt and Needlework Show during Archway Days was the best attended in a long time and
could not have been done without the support of many people. A special thanks goes to all who brought their projects for us
to display. We had more needlework this year than in the past and the quilts submitted were beautiful.
Thanks to the volunteers who made the show possible: Dorothy Brasier, Alberta Conner, Karen Jones, Ruth Bane, and Debbie
Grimme (MainSource Bank). They took tickets, supervised the flea market, and answered questions. Thanks to the members of
Historic Centerville”s board who hung the quilts - Paul Elstro, Ruth Bane, Charlie Bane, and Charlie Weiss. These people
put the quilts on the rods and spent the evening on ladders to make the quilts look great!
The flea market went very well. Many attendees found some great bargains there. A special thanks to all those who donated
items to be sold.
There were crafters in the side yard making the day more enjoyable for many.
Carolyn Lafever, Wayne County Historian, created several interesting displays in the Salisbury Court House. The antique
quilts there added a special touch to the event. We are looking forward to another great quilt show next year. 10/10/12
